BUILDING GREEN
FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT
9/12/2010
“Saving energy” and “Building Green” have become the buzz words of the building industry over the last five years. I remember wading through the piles of green building information streaming across my desk in the beginning of my quest and wondering what was the right path to take to truly be “Green” in my approach to building. I have always been a common sense kind of guy and saving on energy used for heating and cooling seemed to be the best place to start. With lot’s of information and help from my friends at Westar Energy I began to see that many of the building techniques and products that I was presently using were already saving energy. I also found out that by implementing a few changes I could build an “Energy Star” rated home without increasing the cost of the home significantly. Since that time I have built 10 “Energy Star” qualified homes and I am in the process of building more. I take great satisfaction in knowing that the small construction changes I have made ensure the comfort of my clients at a savings of up to 40% on heating and cooling costs.
Saving energy is only the first step in my endeavor to build green. In the following months and years I will be evaluating new products and procedures that are not only effective, but make sense to our building practices. Saving our precious resources and protecting our beautiful environment for the generations to come is worth the effort.
